Part 8 of the 8 Dimensions of Wellbeing Series
What is Social Wellbeing?
Social wellbeing is the ability to create and maintain supportive, meaningful relationships. It’s about feeling connected, understood, and valued by others, as well as contributing to the wellbeing of those around you. This dimension includes your relationships with family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and your community at large.
Why It Matters
Human beings are wired for connection. Strong social bonds can improve mental health, boost resilience, and even support physical health. When you have people to celebrate with in good times and lean on in hard times, life feels richer and more balanced. On the other hand, social isolation and unhealthy relationships can lead to stress, loneliness, and reduced overall wellbeing.
How to Practice Social Wellbeing
- Nurture Existing Relationships: Reach out regularly to friends and family, even with small gestures like a call or message.
- Build New Connections: Join groups, classes, or events that align with your interests and values.
- Set Healthy Boundaries: Respect your own limits while also honoring those of others.
- Be Present in Conversations: Practice active listening and genuine engagement when connecting with others.
- Give and Receive Support: Offer help when you can, and allow others to support you in return.
- Contribute to Your Community: Volunteer, mentor, or participate in local initiatives to strengthen your sense of belonging.
- Evaluate Your Circles: Spend more time with people who uplift and inspire you, and limit time with those who consistently drain your energy.
