A practical guide with lessons learned from past gardening attempts.

Starting an Herb Garden (Even If You’ve Killed Plants Before)

Lately I have noticed a couple of interesting things happening.

Maybe it is just me, but food prices seem to have increased significantly. Even simple items like herbs and seasonings cost more than they used to. Occasionally I place an order for something and when the time comes to fill it, the item is suddenly unavailable.

Weeks go by.

Still unavailable.

At the same time, my social media feeds seem to be filled with gardening and homesteading content. Across multiple platforms, my “For You” pages are suddenly full of people planting tomatoes, harvesting herbs, and talking about growing their own food.

Perhaps the algorithm knows something?

Or perhaps people everywhere are beginning to think a little differently about where their food comes from.

Years ago I did grow some herbs and vegetables. But over time life became busy and, at moments, a little chaotic. When life becomes that way, nurturing things sometimes falls lower on the list of priorities.

Which means my house quietly became the place where plants go to die.

I would like to change that.

While I have some rather ambitious dreams of growing flowers, fruit, vegetables, and herbs, I also know that starting small is usually the wiser path.

So that is the plan.

Simple.

I am starting with herbs.

Herbs are practical. They are something I use regularly in cooking, and they are generally forgiving for beginner gardeners.

Another small decision I made is that I will use what I already have before purchasing more supplies. I am trying to think about sustainability—not only in an environmental sense, but in a financial sense as well.

If the experiment goes well, perhaps later I can reward myself with something prettier or matching.

For now, my garden will not be gracing the cover of a magazine.

It probably won’t even make it onto Pinterest.

But if it can flavor some food, that will be more than enough.

What Herbs I Am Starting With

Since the goal is to keep things manageable, I decided to begin with a few herbs that I already use in the kitchen.

If I am going to grow something, it makes sense that it should be something I regularly reach for when cooking.

For now, I am starting with:

Basil

Parsley

Rosemary

Thyme

Oregano

These herbs are commonly recommended for beginner gardeners because they tend to be fairly resilient and adaptable.

And if all goes well, perhaps the garden will expand later.

But for now, a few pots will do just fine.

Lessons From My Previous Attempts

As I mentioned earlier, this is not my first attempt at growing herbs or vegetables.

Some of those efforts were successful. Others… not so much.

Looking back, I can see a few simple mistakes that probably contributed to those failures.

The first problem was lack of drainage.

Plants do not like sitting in water. Without drainage holes in the bottom of a pot, excess water has nowhere to go, and eventually the roots begin to rot.

Unfortunately, this is something I learned the hard way.

The second issue was overwatering. When you are excited about growing something, it is easy to care a little too much.

And then there were times when life became busy and I went too far in the other direction and simply forgot to water at all.

So this time I am focusing on getting the basics right from the start.

3 Things I’m Doing Differently This Time

(A small reset from my previous gardening attempts.)

1. Proper Drainage
Each planter now has multiple holes drilled in the bottom so excess water can escape. This prevents the roots from sitting in water, which is one of the fastest ways to lose a plant.

2. Better Soil
Instead of using dense garden soil, I’m starting with a light potting mix that includes perlite. This helps the soil stay airy and allows water to drain properly while still holding enough moisture for the plants.

3. Starting Small
Rather than trying to grow everything at once, I’m beginning with just a few herbs that I actually use in the kitchen. A manageable start makes it easier to learn what works before expanding the garden.

Sometimes improvement doesn’t require doing more.

Sometimes it simply means doing a few small things a little better.

Preparing the Pots

Since I had a few random plastic planters tucked away, I decided to start with those.

They are not particularly pretty, but they will work just fine for getting started.

The first step was drilling several holes in the bottom of each pot so excess water can drain out.

Not glamorous.

But necessary.

After that, I added a small layer of rocks or pebbles to the bottom of the pot to help keep soil from compacting over the drainage holes.

Next comes the soil.

For container herbs, a good potting mix that includes perlite works best. Perlite is the small white mineral often mixed into potting soil that helps keep the soil light and airy. It improves drainage and allows roots to breathe.

Soil taken directly from the yard is usually too dense for container gardening and can prevent proper drainage.

Once the pots are filled, I plan to add a light layer of mulch on top of the soil. Mulch helps retain moisture so the soil doesn’t dry out as quickly in the sun.

One option I may try is cedar mulch, which has the added benefit of naturally discouraging some garden pests without the need for chemical treatments.

It is a small step, but small steps tend to add up over time.

Starting Small

There is also a small life lesson tucked inside this project.

When we imagine doing something new, we often picture the finished version first: a flourishing garden, baskets of produce, and beautiful rows of plants.

But most worthwhile things begin much more simply.

A few pots.

Some soil.

A handful of seeds or starter plants.

Starting small makes it easier to learn. It makes it easier to adjust. And it makes it easier to keep going when enthusiasm fades a little.

So for now, a small herb garden feels like the right place to begin.

And if these few herbs grow well, that will be a very good start.

A Small Beginning for Spring

There is something fitting about beginning a small garden in the early days of spring.

Spring reminds us that growth does not happen all at once. It begins quietly—beneath the soil, inside small seeds, in places we might not notice at first.

A few pots of herbs may not seem like much.

But every garden begins somewhere.

And this year, for me, it begins here.

Learn how to start a simple herb garden using pots, good soil, and a few beginner herbs.
